Aloo matar is a very famous Nepali vegetable. This aloo matar is made from potatoes and peas. Aloo matar is eaten by many people with rice, roti, samosa, selroti (Nepali foods) etc. It can be easily found in every restaurant in Nepal. Today we will learn how to make aloo matar at home very easily. Using the methods given below, you can make it easy, fast and healthy at home.


Aloo matar


You need some ingredients as follow:


S. N.       Ingredients/Quantity


1.             Potato (500gm)

2.             Peas (200gm)

3.             Oil (30ml)

4.             Asafoetida (1 pinch)

5.             Cumin (1/4 tsp)

6.             Chop onions (1medium)

7.             Sliced tomatoes (2-3 med)

8.             Coriander powder (1 TSP)

9.             Garam masala/spices (1/2 TSP)

10.           Turmeric (1/4 TSP)

11.           Chilli powder (1/2 TSP)

12.           Salt as per taste

13.           Coriander chopped (5gm)



Cooking method:


1) Peel wash and cut dice potatoes.

2) Heat oil splutter cumin, add asafoetida, add onions fry till golden, add tomatoes stir, mix in spices add potatoes and peas and enough water boil till cooked.

3) Mash potatoes little to slightly thicken the gravy.

4) Correct the seasoning and consistency.

5) Garnish with cop coriander.

In Nepali style;


Cooking method of Aloo Matar:

The main ingredients you need to make it green/Yellow peas ( if you use yellow peast han one night or 5-6 hours soaked peas), peeled potatoes and cut into dice size potatoes (use peas and potatoes equally).Need And other ingredients Cumin, turmeric, cinnamon powder, salt as per taste, hot spices, lightly ground garlic and ginger paste, green chillies 2/4 (cut in half) chopped onion, butter / ghee, chopped tomatoes and a little coriander are needed.


Now add water to the peas and potatoes in a pressure cooker (add the same amount of water as the peas or a little more). Now add a little turmeric, salt and 1sp butter / ghee and mix well. Now put the lid on the pressure cooker and cook on flame. (Cook well with flame / heat medium). Once it is cooked, keep it for a while and put butter / ghee in a separate pan and heat it (flame medium).


After butter / ghee has melted or heated a little, add cumin seeds. Once the cumin starts to fry, add chopped onion and fry it. After frying onion well, add garlic and ginger paste and green chillies and fry again. add chopped tomatoes and fry. Cook until tomatoes are tender.


Once it is well fried, add the pre-cooked peas and potatoes in this pan. Now add chilli powder, a little turmeric and hot spices and cook it well. After cooking for a while, add chopped coriander on top and cook for another 2-3 minutes (Cook over medium flame). Then it is ready to eat your aloo mutter. aloo mutter Now you can eat with your favourite food (samosa, roti, puri etc.)
